HUBsters and local athletes, do you know greatness is amongst you?
The Triathlon England NW Coach Mike Myers is a regular at Wednesday Open Water and Wigan Tri Club sessions, but his main role is developing talent within the North West region. This is a guest blog post by Mike to identify some of the talent we have within the local scene!
I have the great privilege of being the Triathlon England Regional Academy Coach for the North West and we have 13 highly talented individuals in the Youth and Junior Elite categories. I've been prompted as we have been having a great deal of success in recent weeks and this season overall. During the Leeds Triathlon weekend our boys Matt Willis, Dan Slater and Marcus Dey took the entire podium in the Elite Youth Aquathlon racing against 70+ athletes from all over GB. On that occasion Olivia Green ran into 8th position in her race. On Sunday just gone, I drove up to Hetton Lyons in Sunderland for the GB European Youth Championships qualifying Triathlon – guess what – they did it again this time Dan won with Matt second and Marcus a very strong third. On this occasion Olivia took the Bronze medal.
Results are here:
The distances were 500m/10.6km/2.5km approximately
This level of performance from an individual region is previously unheard of and subject to confirmations, all four should be travelling to Hungary with me on 28th June to race for GB. The NW Academy should have 4 of the 8 members of the GB Elite team (4 girls and 4 boys). Below is a link to the event which takes the exciting format of Heats on day one, Finals on day 2 and Mixed Relays on day 3. (Never mind the Euro vote – I’m thinking of declaring the North West an independent country for triathlon purposes!)
Why is this relevant for you?
Many of you will know the academy members from Hub Sessions. 16 year old Dan regularly attended the Pimbo chain gang throughout the winter and rode Fox & Hounds last summer. Those of you who did HUBCross will remember Matt who is also 16 as the one who stormed through the field on his mountain bike to take the win lapping many on the way and leaving Pommy devastated. 15 year old Marcus is an amazing swimmer and triathlete who does the 3 Sisters swim every week with his dad, an ex GB swimmer himself who swims with his son in the advanced group. In fact, all 3 are regulars at the Wednesday swim and will once again be riding Pimbo chain gang throughout the winter as part of their triathlon training.
The Endurance Store very kindly provided a free bike fit for Dan Slater recently and Running Lab tests for Dan, Matt and Marcus. Marc Laithwaite is a constant source of triathlon knowledge for me and recently helped to resolve a problem for Dan who found himself without a swim club to train at in Liverpool.
There is a wealth of talent in the ranks of the Academy and the future is very bright for many of the others as well. So just remember, when you're swimming on Wednesday or riding the Fox & Hounds, you may well be sitting on the wheel of a future Olympic champion. The North West is definitely where's it's at for triathlon racing.
